BIO OF 1ST PLACE ARTIST: Steve Johnson

I am a Canadian painter and photographer. My art combines the best of expressionist and mid century modernist art styles. Being largely self taught, my artwork delivers a bold and immediate impact on the viewer. My favored medium is using acrylic. Lately, I have been applying oil pastel to acrylic in a multimedia format.

Cathartic Inspiration: Watching the movie ‘Pollock’ starring Ed Harris..a searing portrayal of one of the founders of Abstract Expressionism (and tortured genius)!

Achievements: Throughout my journey, my dedication has been recognized on both local and international stages. In 2018, I proudly earned the title of finalist in the esteemed Chatham-Kent “Eye for Art” contest. Building on that momentum, I secured consecutive successes in the prestigious American Art Awards contest in 2021 and 2022, clinching the esteemed 3rd place for my awe-inspiring pieces “Backyard Metamorphosis” and “Spirits of Rose Beach.”

Why My Art Stands Out: My distinctive artistic voice is a celebration of the living world and the human spirit. I invite viewers of my art to embark on an emotional and introspective journey. Melding expressionism and mid-century modernism, I create artwork that exudes both raw passion and a bold colorful vibe. Each work is a window into the depths of my soul, inviting audiences to contemplate the wonder of our existence through the lens of art.
