BIO OF 1ST PLACE WINNER: Beata Bylinka – a resident of a small town near Warsaw, Poland. A long-time employee of the Municipal Cultural Center, where she was an art instructor, a graduate of cultural studies at the University of Humanities and Economics in Łódź, a lover of colorful yarns and a crocheting enthusiast for several years.

About herself: My adventure with crochet and yarn began in the summer of 2016. Since then, I have made many crocheted mascots, dolls, fairy tale characters and colorful yarn paintings. When creating, I do not use any patterns, diagrams or tutorials. All works are personally designed and made by me. I am inspired by nature, painting and colorful photography. I use a regular crochet hook and colorful acrylic yarn.

Currently, I devote every free moment to my passion. Creative work helps me improve my crochet skills and constantly acquire new skills. It teaches patience, relaxes and gives great joy :)

BIO OF 1ST PLACE WINNER:

Dance Doyle is an Oakland-based artist. Born and bred there during the ’80s and ’90s, they witnessed a gritty beauty emerging from the city after the crack epidemic had torn through it. That beautiful, heavy environment has informed Dance’s work.

Dance continued to grow as an artist, and their primary focus has been telling contemporary narratives reflecting, piece by piece, examples of our human condition in these overpopulated urban environments.

Dance’s been an artist in residence at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, the MAD Museum in NYC, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, NE. They’re serving as vice president of Tapestry Weavers West. They are members of the American Tapestry Alliance and the Textile Arts Council at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, CA.

Dance was a Barclay Simpson and Murphy Cadogan Award recipient. Currently, they’ve just begun a years-long Graduate Fellowship at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, CA. http://www.dancedoyle.com
