BIO OF 1ST PLACE WINNER: Gene Boshkaykin
is a talented First Nation portrait artist hailing from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Born in Fort Frances and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, Gene developed a passion for art at a young age, starting to draw when he was just ten years old. His artistic journey led him to attend the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he honed his skills and deepened his understanding of art.
In 2002, Gene made the pivotal decision to return to Canada, reconnecting with his roots and the vibrant culture that inspires his work. Since 2018, he has been focusing on drawing commissions, capturing the essence and stories of his subjects through his portraits. Gene’s work not only reflects his artistic talent but also honors his First Nation heritage, blending personal narrative with cultural identity. Through his art, he aims to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the human experience, making each piece a unique tribute to the individuals he portrays. As he continues to grow as an artist, Gene remains dedicated to sharing his perspective and stories through his compelling and emotive artwork.
