The 1st Place to 6th Place winners in all 50 categories will be revealed in the news about a category a day — stretching into November, making this one of the longest winner announcements of any art competition in the world.

Jane Lewis graduated from the Slade School of Art in London in 1977, where she later taught. She also lectured at other London colleges until in1986, following a 12 month residency with Kent Opera, she was able pursue an independent studio practice. Since then she has received awards and commissions from the Henry Moore Foundation, Standard Chartered Bank, the Oppenhein-John Downes Trust and Arts Council England. Articles about Jane’s work and reproductions of her images have appeared in art catalogues, books and periodicals, and her paintings and graphic works are in a number of public collections and numerous private collections. She has exhibited widely in the UK and also in internationally, and now shows regularly with the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery in Vienna.

Jane’s painting technique is in part influenced by the artists of the early Italian and Northern European Renaissance, but while her working methods and materials could be seen as traditional, the subject matter is wide-ranging, challenging and of its time. Her aim is to produce technically immaculate paintings and graphic works which often contain subversive or surreal imagery, a paradox that at first seduces and then challenges the viewer. The human figures, animals and objects depicted intentionaly convey a stillness and impression of time arrested — part of a personal narrative expressing an inner world and its relationship with an outer reality.
