BIO OF 1ST PLACE WINNER ALAN TODD:
After graduating from the Byam Shaw School of Art in London in 1970, I moved to Australia where I have been a practicing artist ever since. I work in a variety of mediums including paint, wood, metal and contemporary dance but the idea always comes first and draws upon lived experience. The sequence of works, which are ongoing, entitled Conversations With My Father are ironic in that the conversations never took place. These four paintings are part of an extended series based upon moments in my life that were never shared. The second iteration are all sculptures and the third will be reliefs based upon dialogue between disparate materials collected from hardware stores. As someone who lived through the Great Depression and WW2, my father learned to ‘make do’ and repurposing hardware items is a way to create a link between us four years after his death.
I work in the Adelaide Hills in the Vanilla Sky studio and exhibit extensively. Recent exhibitions included the Palmer International Sculpture competition where I installed a major work on the open hillside. https://alantoddvisualartist.com
