The WORLD ART AWARDS winners in CATEGORY 40: SURREALISM live in USA, CHILE, CHINA, GERMANY, POLAND, INDIA & MACEDONIA.

Artists from 79 countries competed in the 2023 WORLD ART AWARDS where 20 of the most revered galleries in the world were sent online images to score in drawing, painting, sculpture, digital and photography.

BIO OF 1ST PLACE WINNER: JOE STAVEC

Joe Stavec is an American born in 1957. He paints images in oils and sumi inks. Joe’s artistic influences include Rene’ Magritte, Odilon Redon, Max Ernst, Salvador Dali and Charles Burchfield. He takes inspiration from many things, not least of which is the written word. Authors such as Neil Gaiman and Jorge Luis Borges put him in a mindset to create images of a world that exists just behind the veil of what we perceive as our reality. World mythology is also a rich source of inspiration with its tales of fantastic creatures and heroic deeds. Joe paints in the traditional manner, with underpaintings and color glazes. He blends realistic settings with the unusual and unexpected like the flash memory of a dream or a place once visited but forgotten. Joe’s latest works are smaller in size which has enabled him to explore more images from his mind.

Joe is a 1980 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Arts, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Lithography. He works daily in his studio with Sherlock, an African Grey parrot, at his side. Joe plays the electric bass (jazz & fusion & funk) and is a comic book reader and collector. He studied the martial art of Goshin Ju Jutsu, achieving the rank of San Dan, third degree black belt. Joe resides at Stavec Park in Walton Hills, Ohio, USA with his wife, Stephanie and lots of critters. https://saatchiart.com/joestavec
