The World Art Awards has announced its selection of the 20 Best Galleries and Museums globally for the year 2023, with Balcony Contemporary Art Gallery receiving the award for the Best Gallery in Portugal. Each year, only one museum or gallery per country is chosen based on several criteria, including years of establishment, industry reputation, location, size, socially relevant exhibits, motivational and educational programs, represented artists, and references from artists, clients, and visitors.

In the Top 20 for 2023, the World Art Awards chose a museum spanning over 140,000 sq ft, along with some contemporary art galleries that are much smaller. The selection also included European historical museums with art and antiquities dating back thousands of years, some with masterpieces by renowned artists such as Botticelli, Mantegna, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, Chagall, Matisse, Picasso, among others. To balance, the awards committee also chose some very new and contemporary hotspots in diverse countries and cultures representing important young work, from painting to digital art, photography, and sculpture. The committee opted for large, modern art centers in Ghana and Zambia and a boundary-pushing contemporary facility with an influential international presence in China/Hong Kong. In Israel and Latvia, they chose stunning underground crypts and sub-basement venues that are cherished tourist attractions.

World Art Awards: “Our Best in Portugal, Balcony Contemporary Art Gallery, appeared in 2017, adding one more reference to the art map of Lisbon. Located in Alvalade, in an old store of Edifício América, it was transformed into a stunning 2,400 sq ft museum-like showplace, with two floors allowing the creation of different circuits and exhibition room. The Gallery presents emerging artists, both Portuguese and foreign, and avidly participates in national and international art fairs, presenting various interdisciplinary projects.”
