For 12 years, American Art Awards has decided the 25 Best Galleries and Museums in America. Among the criteria: years in business, industry reputation, online activity, location, size, exhibits, educational programs, represented artists and references from artists, clients and visitors. Each year only one gallery or museum per state in 25 states is selected.

American Art Awards: “Designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli, the striking 51,500 sq ft facility offers many art galleries, a 230-seat lecture hall, a children’s classroom, a new-media gallery, a study center for drawings, prints, and photographs and an enormous rooftop sculpture garden. MMoCA is an independent organization that exhibits, collects, and preserves modern and contemporary art, providing transformative experiences that educate and inspire individuals and the community as a whole. American Art Awards selects the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art as our Best Gallery or Museum in Wisconsin, 2020, and one of our Top 25 American Galleries and Museums for 2020.”

Following 105 years of presenting exhibitions and education programs in borrowed and refurbished spaces, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art opened to the public on April 23, 2006, in a brand new facility connected to Overture Center for the Arts, made possible by the extraordinary generosity of W. Jerome Frautschi. Exhibitions and most education programs are free to the public.

MMoCA fosters the exchange of ideas, creating experiences that inspire a wide audience; a nexus for the work of emerging and established artists, welcoming compelling new work, presenting this in a dynamic and extraordinary space; a catalyst for the continued development of a vigorous community of artists; a forum which encourages people to be challenged by, reflect on, and make connections between art and the world around them.

Good food is truly an art at Fresco, the museum’s rooftop restaurant: local, seasonal ingredients and contemporary American cuisine. Patrons may choose to dine alongside a glass wall overlooking the museum’s sculpture garden or — during warm months — sit at the garden’s edge and enjoy their meal al fresco.
