Best Gallery Or Museum In Missouri: Kemper Museum Of Contemporary Art / 2020 American Art Awards

For 12 years, American Art Awards has decided the 25 Best Galleries and Museums in America. Among the criteria: years in business, industry reputation, online activity, location, size, exhibits, educational programs, represented artists and references from artists, clients and visitors. Each year only one gallery or museum per state in 25 states is selected.

American Art Awards: “For 26 years, Kansas City’s acclaimed, free contemporary art museum has offered an exemplary Permanent Collection of modern and contemporary works from around the world. The 23,000 sq ft museum hosts exciting and innovative exhibitions, installations, lectures, workshops, and other creative programs, for all ages. The American Art Awards is proud to proclaim Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art the Best Gallery or Museum in Missouri, 2020, and one of the 25 Best Galleries and Museums in America.”

Kemper Museum stands today as a reflection and voice of the co-founders’ unwavering belief in the beauty and power of art:

“My joy is to live surrounded by beauty, and what is more beautiful than great art? I do not feel that I possess art, but am merely the caretaker.” — R. Crosby Kemper Jr.

“The world’s upheavals are a great challenge to our universal sense of harmony, and it seems that the gift of art, whether it be painting, sculpture, film, music, or some other form, is one of the things that, if we let it, can restore the sense of peace in one’s soul.” — Bebe Hunt

Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art opened October 2, 1994 and was formally incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit museum with an independent board of trustees on September 13, 1995. Group and solo artist exhibitions feature established and emerging artists from the United States and around the world.

The PERMANENT COLLECTION includes works by such artists as Louise Bourgeois, Christian Boltanski, Manuel Neri, Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Stella, Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Hung Liu, Robert Motherwell, Deborah Butterfield, Fairfield Porter, Wayne Thiebaud, Grace Hartigan, William Wegman, Red Grooms, Georgia O’Keeffe, Christopher Brown, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Past special exhibitions have included works by Alex Katz, Liza Lou, Christian Boltanski, Adam Cvijanovic, Siah Armajani, Rashid Johnson, Lois Dodd, Kojo Griffin, Alison Saar, and Fairfield Porter, among many others. Lectures, film and video series, performances, and workshops are offered on a regular basis in the Museum’s meeting room and Museum Atrium.
