For 12 years, American Art Awards has decided the 25 Best Galleries and Museums in America. Among the criteria: years in business, industry reputation, online activity, location, size, exhibits, educational programs, represented artists and references from artists, clients and visitors. Each year only one gallery or museum per state in 25 states is selected.

American Art Awards: “The contemporary 3,500 sq ft gallery and critical thinking performance venue for heralded private Catholic college, Benedictine University, showcases an expansive permanent art collection of fine and applied arts consisting of local, regional and internationally recognized artists. For forty years, the curriculum, staff, programs and exhibitions have worked to expand the understanding of art and culture in the Chicago communities and throughout the Midwest, Southwest and Eastern Asia regions. The American Art Awards is proud to proclaim the Fr. Michael E. Komechak, O.S.B. Art Gallery the Best Gallery or Museum in Illinois, 2020, and one of the 25 Best Galleries and Museums in America.”

MORE ABOUT THE GALLERY:

Benedictine University is a private Catholic university located in the western Chicago suburban community of Lisle, Illinois. Before the Fr. Michael E. Komechak, O.S.B Art Gallery was established in 2013, the permanent art collection was displayed in the hallways of the fourth floor in Old Ben Hall and appropriated temporary exhibit spaces in display cases and hallways all around the campus.

After the demolition of Ben Hall in 2004, Fr. Michael began to disperse a portion of the collection throughout the campus and moved the rest of the collection into a 900 square foot office space in Scholl Hall. Though passionate about promoting art, in 2009, Michael passed away.

In December of 2012, Fr. Michael’s dream was realized when Benedictine University announced that an art gallery would be established in the name of Fr. Michael E. Komechak, O.S.B.. Located on the fifth floor of the Kindlon Hall of Learning, overlooking the city of Lisle, IL, the area would include 1500 sq. ft. of exhibition ability along with climate controlled archival space, fully equipped work area, and 2000 sq. ft. of additional floor space to be used for events and programming. In 2013, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place to commemorate the opening of the much anticipated Fr. Michael E. Komechak, O.S.B. Art Gallery.
