Best Gallery Or Museum In Delaware: The Delaware Contemporary / 2020 American Art Awards

For 12 years, American Art Awards has decided the 25 Best Galleries and Museums in America. Among the criteria: years in business, industry reputation, online activity, location, size, exhibits, educational programs, represented artists and references from artists, clients and visitors. Each year only one gallery or museum per state in 25 states is selected.

American Art Awards: “The Delaware Contemporary is a dynamic 33,000 sq ft building housing seven galleries, 26 on-site artist studios, an auditorium, a museum shop, a classroom, and an administrative office space. Founded in 1979 by artists, it now presents over 24 annual innovative exhibitions on topical issues by regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized artists. This transformative institution takes risks and pushes boundaries — to great success. American Art Awards selects The Delaware Contemporary as our Best Gallery or Museum in Delaware, 2020, and one of our Top 25 American Galleries and Museums for 2020.”

Birthed over 40 years ago in a former sheet-metal fabricating factory, and after moving several times, found its permanent home in 2000. By this time a staff was in place and both community outreach and curatorial programming expanded exponentially.

The community responded favorably to The Delaware Contemporary’s new location and programming efforts. The Philadelphia Inquirer described the museum as “one of the most innovative and prominent organizations of its kind on the East Coast,” and hailed its new building as “a state-of-the-art facility that will allow it to present a broader spectrum of the art experience.”

The Delaware Contemporary, a non-collecting museum, in addition to the 24 annual exhibitions, commits to educational and community outreach through many programs, such as Artist Residencies with underserved community groups and Contemporary Connections, a model program that fuses art with schools’ core curriculum. They have partnered with more than 60 community groups and schools.

The Delaware Contemporary, “We are very honored and proud of the impact we have on our state and the power art has in bringing our communities together.”
