Painters, photographers, sculptors and digital artists from 62 countries competed in the most prestigious online art call, AMERICAN ART AWARDS, https://www.americanartawards.com/, where America’s 25 best galleries and museums score art in 50 categories. In this column, I’ll reveal the world’s best contemporary artists of 2020 one category at a time.

BIO OF FIRST PLACE WINNER DONG YANG:

World renowned sculptor in Shanghai.

“When I was very young, I have seen a lot of animal sculptures in my grandparents’ house. Those were the European sculptures and bought by my grandfather from various places. So vivid and beautiful that I could gaze at them all day long.

“However, during the culture revolution, those sculptures suddenly disappeared overnight. I became became so angry when I saw the empty tables, but nobody could explain to me why. Angry and lonely, a young boy, my father gave me the first piece of plasticine and from that moment, it became the first love of my life my life — making sculptures.

“To make the sculptures become my hobby after school. This led me to my lifelong pursuit. I started my study in the art school in Tianjin after the compulsory education, then went to Art School following by Central Academy of Art in Beijing for 7 years.

“As an artist, I have tried to use the simplest language with logic and clarity to express the ideology of decency, elegance of the behavior, inner peace and determination of the mind and soul, even though the external world is at chaos and out of control most of the time.” bettyshi2016@163.com
