Painters, photographers, sculptors and digital artists from 62 countries competed in the most prestigious online art call, AMERICAN ART AWARDS, https://www.americanartawards.com/, where America’s 25 best galleries and museums score art in 50 categories. In this column, I’ll reveal the world’s best contemporary artists of 2020 one category at a time.

Winners in this category are from Philippines, Oman, USA and Russia.

BIO OF FIRST PLACE WINNER: Edward Coronel

is a self-taught visual artist since childhood, but he is equally inspired by science. He graduated as a physicist and taught at the same school, the University of the Philippines-Diliman. His professional career in the arts began in 2006, and started his roots in abstractions but upon his latest solo exhibition in 2019, he veered towards realism, with methods much more deliberate and calculated.

His background in the sciences lent him the precision for a specialization in realism, and earned him last year’s 6th place in the American Art Awards 2019 Best Landscape with Life Category for his painting, “Fruit Vendor 2 (Still Life with 725 fruits)”.

Coronel’s DIVERSITY ( 36”x48” oil painting on canvas) shows the cute, sweet and fun gummy bear candies, as a representative of our familiar yet nonchalant attitude to consumption and mass production. What would it be like if the gummies were not anonymous as we thought? DIVERSITY is a reminder to pause and inquire about our recognition and acceptance of our own diversity; that we are not anonymous among ourselves; that we are all equal and have a role to contribute and fulfill.

Each May the American Art Awards organization selects the 25 Best Galleries and Museums in America, then in autumn these revered art institutions vote on online art to decide the world’s best contemporary artists.

Last month America’s 25 Best Galleries scored almost 2,000 works in 50 categories from 62 countries: Afghanistan, Armenia, Australia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Haiti, Hong Kong, India, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Republic Of Korea, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Serbia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Uganda, UK, Ukraine, USA, Venezuela, Zimbabwe.
