Painters, photographers, sculptors and digital artists from 62 countries competed in the most prestigious online art call, AMERICAN ART AWARDS, https://www.americanartawards.com/, where America’s 25 best galleries and museums score art in 50 categories. In this column, I’ll reveal the world’s best contemporary artists of 2020 one category at a time.

Winners in this category are from Canada, USA, South Africa, Russia and China.

BIO OF 1ST PLACE WINNER Sandra MacGillivray:

I try not to be trapped by living with the results of other peoples thinking. By not letting the noise of other’s opinions drown out my inner voice, I am able to have the courage to follow my heart and listen to my intuition. Somehow, my inner voice knows what the painting wants to become and brings it to life.

As an accredited member of the Portrait Society of Canada, graduate of Sheridan College Institute of Design and Technology my paintings are collected nationally and internationally and have been published in Arabella Art Magazine. I have been awarded the Emily Carr Legacy award and was honoured as a top10 Artist at the 2015 McMichael 25th annual Art Show.

After enjoying a successful career in Advertising as a Designer and Creative Director, I am now pursuing my life long passion for fine art and portraiture. Painting in a realistic style I capture the emotion and mood of the subject. Through colour and detail, my paintings capture the subject’s story and a moment in time, compelling the viewer to stop and be inspired. The paintings allow the viewer to enter into a journey and share for just a little while the reason the piece of art was created.

My goal is always to engage with the viewer. Otherwise it is merely paint on canvas.

BIO OF 1ST PLACE WINNER Kun Wang

Kun Wang was born in Jilin Province of China in 1970. His legs were paralyzed due to polio at the age of 3. He loved painting since childhood and attended elementary art training at the age of 7, and he gradually showed extraordinary art talent. Elementary training could not satisfy his strong desire for the study of art, so he sought a higher level of education by all means. Unfortunately his physical restriction was a serious handicap in his studying, so he had no choice but to learn by himself.
